Travel Day – Bangkok to Chiang Mai: Week 7 / Day 47 / Feb 26
Chiang Mai, Thailand: Today is a pretty straightforward travel day from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. Well, at least it should have been. Due to poor planning and taking a bit too long to get everything together, I did not make it to the Bangkok airport in time to check in for my flight. Fortunately, flights from Bangkok to Chiang Mai run similar to busses and I got on the next one two hours later.
After arriving in Chiang Mai I headed out for dinner and to do a little light exploration. The old city, where I am staying, is a square about 1 km on each side. At the corners and entrances there are still remnants of the old city walls.

Near the gate that I walked through as I explored there was some sort of show going on.
Further along the road in the same area were the beginnings of the night market.
The market stretched out for quite a ways and included a wide variety of restaurants and vendors.
Most impressive to me were the detailed soap carvings that were for sale.
Finally, I cannot leave Bangkok entirely behind without including at least one mention of this masterpiece:
Two things about this: 1. Wow! Does this just encapsulate every eighties music / video cliche in four minutes or what? 2. Although I remembered the song, until looking this up, I had no idea it was from a musical written by the two guys from ABBA (Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus) and Tim Rice about international chess championships.
