Ecological Reserve and San Telmo Market: Week 13 / Day 91 / April 11
Buenos Aires, Argentina: We left the apartment this morning to go to the Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur – a large preserve on the coast.
However, when we got there, we discovered that the park had been closed since it had rained the night before. I was more than happy to put up with a little mud on my shoes, but the gates to the park were locked and the guards seemed uninterested in opening them. We decided to walk along the lakefront area for a while and look around. All along the sidewalk there were statues of famous Argentinian athletes.
We were a little bit surprised by the manner in which the one for Lionel Messi had been treated. Continuing along this path we also saw some parakeets on the lightpoles and in the trees.
Leaving this area, we made our way over to the Kirchner Cultural Center.
This enormous building used to be the central post office for Buenos Aires, but now houses numerous galleries, concert halls, and other display places.
On the day we visited, access was somewhat limited (5th Floor only), so we were unable to spend much time there.
Leaving the cultural center, we headed towards the San Telmo Market area. Although most lively on Sundays, this was our last opportunity to visit. On our walk there we passed by Plaza de Mayo again, and also a protest that was taking place.
The protest was taking place outside of the offices of the Syndicate of Mechanics and Affiliated Automotive Transport of Buenos Aires. We were told later that the protest had to do with the conflict between Uber and traditional taxi drivers. While I could not understand the point being made, the protest was quite lively.
Continuing our walk, we arrived at the market. After wandering around for a bit, we stopped at one of the many restaurants within the market for a late lunch.
After finishing up at the market, we went back to our apartment for the evening.
