Hong Kong Redux – Part Deux: Week 11 / Day 74 / March 25
Hong Kong: Linda and I decided to head out to see the Giant Buddha before heading to the airport for our flight to LAX en route to Lima Peru. As before, the Buddha is, well, giant.
The fog that rolled in and out as we were there lent the entire area a nice mystical quality. It also made for some nice views of the nearby mountains and the islands just offshore.
Wandering through the temple and monastery grounds I was amazed at the size of some of the incense. We initially spotted the yellow ones that I thought were large, right up until we saw the red ones.
As we were leaving I noticed this interesting plate on the ground, which I can only assume has to do with an electrical box or something similar. Either way, I like the name.
We headed to the airport for our 7:00 PM flight to LAX which landed the same day at 5:00 PM in Los Angeles. Flights across the International Date Line make my head hurt and confuse me with the idea that I land before I take off.
We headed into Terminal 4 where we thought our flight to Lima was taking off from. It had all the charm of a Greyhound Bus Station (no offense to Greyhound) as I remembered from my many trips through there for work. However, we eventually worked out that we were departing from the Tom Bradley International Terminal. This was a whole different experience and seemed more like the airports I have seen in Qatar, Hong Kong, or Zurich.
On our many flights as we have traversed the globe, I have been amazed at how easy it is for me to travel because all of the announcements are made in both the local language and in English. Whether in Tanzania, Israel, Thailand, or Hong Kong that has been the case. Well, up until Los Angeles. There the announcements were almost all in Spanish with only minimal information provided in English. Was a little bit surprising.
Tomorrow morning we arrive in Lima and then head off to Cusco to begin our time in Peru.
