Royal National Park and Rugby: Week 10 / Day 64 / March 15
Sydney, Australia: Expecting yet another dismal day, we were pleasantly surprised when the sun came out during the morning. Rather than hanging around the Sydney area for the day as we had originally planned, we decided to hop in the car and head back to Royal National Park. When we had gone there before we had the choice of two trails: One leading to Eagle Rock and the other to the Wedding Cake. Since we had done Eagle Rock on Monday, today we are off to see the Wedding Cake.
Upon arrival in the parking area, we first saw the elusive Australian Blu Moose.
The hike down to the cliffs was pretty straightforward and we did it quickly as rain looked imminent.
Once we got to the cliffs we slowed our pace a bit, but still moved pretty swiftly. We could see showers offshore and wanted to get our hike done before any rain arrived.
The colors in the sandstone that makes up the cliffs are really quite beautiful. Some areas were a reddish / orange while others were almost completely white.
We arrived at a small inlet that had water trickling down to the ocean and large rocks where the waves were crashing.
We sat down at the edge of the water for a loooooong time watching the waves hit against the rocks.
I managed to get one of my shoes soaked by getting a little too close to the waves, but definitely worth it.
After hiking a bit more, we arrived at the Wedding Cake.
Because of the instability of the rocks, the area near the cliff edge is all fenced off. After looking around a bit, we went back the way we came and headed towards the car.
They really do an impressive job with the trails here. Show below is one of the staircases that are carved into the rock.
After we got back to the car we headed back to Sydney. We went out for dinner and then headed to the Sydney Cricket Ground for a rugby match.
Earlier we had purchased tickets for tonight’s match between the Sydney Roosters and the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
It was very odd seeing actual betting parlors located within the stadium.
This was the first match of the new season and the Sydney Roosters are the defending champions from last season. The pre-game festivities involved a lot of pyrotechnics.
Once the match got underway, it was very entertaining.
After the match, we went back down to Bondi Beach for ice cream and then called it a night.
