Palais Bahia: Week 1 / Day 6 / Jan 16
Marrakech, Morocco: This morning was a visit to the Bahia Palace in Marrakech. Built in the late 19th century, this palace is of more recent vintage than the others we have seen. Just a short walk from our Riad, it was a great way to start the day. If you did not like the pictures of geometric tile patterns or detailed wood paintings of the Real Alcazár in Sevilla, turn back now as there is nothing for you here.
Much the same as the Real Alcazár, this palace contains a central garden that is entered shortly after passing through the palace entrance. This garden is surrounded by rooms with tiled walls and painted wood ceilings.
Moving further into the palace, we walked through larger rooms before emptying out into a long courtyard.
Located at the back of the courtyard was a large room shown below. If you look carefully at the last picture, you can see the Hartsough included for scale.
Leaving the room, we go back to the courtyard before passing to the gardens of the palace.
Leaving the gardens, we reenter the palace. Shown below are additional examples walls / ceilings and closeups of some of the wood painted panels and the large ceilings.
